Mariposa Park is a favorite of several of our paddlers at 36 Nonquon Street in Seagrave. The park officially has 3 parking spaces. Unofficially, you can also park on Nonquon street. The park has a picnic table and lots of green space. There is a gravel beach that is primarily used for launching kayaks onto the Nonquon River. There is a grassy section that may be of interest for Delta-class launching.
The Nonquon is a slow flowing, curvy stream that hosts the Canoe the Nonquon annual race that takes place on the first Saturday in June each year. This race was started by the Lake Scugog Historical Society as a fundraiser for the Scugog Shores Museum Village in 1969 and continues to support the Museum today! Canoe the Nonquon is sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racing Association (OMCKRA). The Scugog Kayak Club is a major supporter, and our volunteers do the pre-run on the previous Saturday.
Paddling to the north (turning right) against the current, within an hour you will hit the beaver dam and beaver lodges. There is various nature from herons to turtles to beavers. There are some submerged logs that can provide a challenge depending on the level of the lake and the river.
Paddling to the south, (downstream, turn left from the launch), within an hour you will be on Lake Scugog, where you’ll meet colonies of Canada geese and suntanning turtles. You can exit at the public launch at Robinglade Park before you hit Lake Scugog. And directly across the lake, a short paddle, is one of our sponsors, Scugog Landing, which has a kayak launcher for easy exit, washrooms and a restaurant. A short paddle north of Scugog Landing is the former resort of Seven Mile Island.
When you reach the Lake Scugog you can also choose to paddle north on the lake’s western shore. Lots of marsh and wildlife and deadwood for those people that collected for their gardens.
